Born in 1899, Ruth came out as a lesbian in 1915. Beginning in the 1930s, Ms. Ellis provided shelter, physical support and spiritual affirmation to those whose race, sexual orientation or both set them apart from the dominant culture. Ruth lived to be 101, seeing the Center come to being prior to her passing in 2000. The work we continue to do at the Ruth Ellis Center is built upon her model of responsibility to oneself and one’s community.
Seven Ponds Nature Center	Environment	https://sevenponds.org/	Patty and Rip offered 100 acres of land and lakes, and the resources to construct a small building to the Michigan Audubon Society. The land was part of an extensive wetland area in Lapeer County known as the Seven Ponds. This tract contained a series of seven small glacial lakes connected by channels and surrounded by marshes, woodlands, and fields. The land was accepted by Michigan Audubon in October of 1966. MAS designated the Genesee, Grosse Pointe, Lapeer, and Oakland Chapters as participants in the undertaking and Seven Ponds was on its way. This media ranges from education and advisement to inspiration and guidance and covers every aspect of life, from abuse through money management. We help families and youth access positive, productive information and passionate role models that will lead them beyond the negative messages in the media, and on to becoming the individual stars that they are. This Order is a mendicant religious order of men with their origin in Francis of Assisi. It comprises three separate groups, each considered a religious order in its own right. These are the Observants, most commonly simply called “Franciscan friars,” the Capuchins, and the Conventual Franciscans. They all live according to “The Rule of St. Francis”.
Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center	Community	https://setxnonprofit.org/	A local group of funders had a vision of an organization that would nurture a community of strong nonprofits to improve and transform the quality of life in Southeast Texas. The Center would provide management support services to nonprofits and funders enabling them to effectively serve the surrounding counties. This vision became a reality in April 2008, as the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center opened its doors to serve the community.

In 1999 Dr. Burwell opened the first Michigan Satellite of Kids Against Hunger, after attending a presentation where Richard Proudfit was speaking. Mr. Proudfit, founder of the Minneapolis based Kids Against Hunger, wanted to open satellites all over the country.
Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit	Housing	https://fairhousingdetroit.org/	Since 1977 the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit (FHCMD), a private, non-profit, citizen-based organization - with IRS 501 (c)(3) tax exempt status - has worked to help assure equal housing opportunities throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. As you will discover when you browse this website, FHCMD has had significant success, especially in relation to improving the enforcement of fair housing laws, with subsequent improvements in the fair housing behavior of housing providers in the metropolitan Detroit area. The recovery from defendants of over $11,000,000 for the plaintiffs in 394 closed litigations has made a positive difference for fair housing. Our goal is to assure that homeseekers are able to exercise their equal rights to the housing of their choice, without encountering unlawful housing discrimination.
